Major overhaul begins for Kogan Creek Power Station

Kogan Creek Power Station

Queensland energy company CS Energy has commenced a major overhaul of the Kogan Creek Power Station near Chinchilla in south-west Queensland.

One of Australia’s newest and most efficient coal-fired power stations, Kogan Creek Power Station’s ‘tune up’ will see more than 400 extra workers onsite and flow-on economic benefits to the Darling Downs.

The power station features high-efficiency, super-critical boiler technology and has one of the lowest greenhouse gas emission intensities for a coal-fired power station in Australia.

“As the electricity industry transitions to a lower carbon generation mix over the coming decades, it is critical that reliable base load generators like Kogan Creek Power Station are well maintained to provide security of supply for Queensland,” CS Energy CEO Martin Moore said.

“When operating at its full capacity of 750MW, Kogan Creek can generate enough electricity to power up to one million homes.

“Kogan Creek Power Station is also highly water efficient as it uses dry cooling technology, which results in 95 per cent less water use than a conventional wet cooled power station.”

The overhaul’s major contractors Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Siemens and Australian Laboratory Services have mobilised their workforces on site at Kogan Creek Power Station for the overhaul.

A number of Kogan Creek Power Station’s regular local suppliers in Chinchilla and Dalby are also assisting with the overhaul, including Regional Instrumentation and Electrical Services, Chinchilla Fluid Power, Healy Contracting and Daybreak Equipment.
